Gear Head Graphics
The Gear Head Dirt Bike Graphics was a self-motivated project. The name comes from the design and the motocross industry. A Gear Head is often referred to a person who has a passion for working on anything mechanical, especially dirt bikes. Normally, dirt bike graphics are designed specifically for each rider, incorporating their name and number. For this project however, I wanted to target more of an industrial design.
By photographing clock gears and rustic tiles bought from a home improvement store, I created the realistic gears. I altered the image in Adobe Photoshop to create a rusting and steam punk feel. Along with the photo realistic gears, I used vector-illustrated gears derived from the same images I photographed from the clock to give the design more contrast. To help enhance the vision of a Gear Head, I designed the graphics to look like they were being ripped apart, showing the rusting gears beneath the vector-illustrated design.
The final design was printed using the Roland VersaWorks software and a Roland VersaCamm. The final application was produced using a 2mil gloss white cast vinyl with bubble releasing technology and a 2mil cast overlaminate. The template for the pictured 09' YZF450f was courtesy of 343 Graphix.
